What to Wear? Brown or Black Shoes with a Navy Suit – with The Groomsman Suit (SuitShop)

Grooms may not have to buy a wedding gown, but they still have some important (and difficult!) decisions to make when it comes to finding the right suit, belt and shoes. The formalwear experts from SuitShop (formerly known as The Groomsman Suit) popped by the blog to discuss all things suiting and to answer one of the most confusing questions— what color shoes does a man wear with a navy suit?

There is so much to think about when it comes to selecting your wedding day look. While many might think the groom has it the easiest, and wonder, “what’s so difficult about selecting a suit?” There is actually quite a bit that goes into selecting the groom’s suit or tuxedo and the complementing accessories. Men’s suiting is one of the most challenging wardrobe items for a gentleman to purchase, especially when trying to achieve a proper fit. And after fit, the finishing details of the look must be determined— which can be a whole other challenge in itself!

Choose Your Color

When it comes to the groom’s look, usually the first step is to select the perfect suit (or tuxedo) in a color to complement the bride-to-be and all of the fine details of the wedding day. Your bride has likely told you just a little bit about her gown. Possibly she’s said, “It’s ivory, floor length, and has Alencon lace detailing.” You might be thinking, “Well, that doesn’t tell me too much,” but actually there are some key statements in this seemingly small set of information. Floor length, as opposed to knee length or tea length, indicates a certain level of formality.  A floor length gown is more formal than the alternatives. This doesn’t mean you must run out and purchase a tuxedo for the Big Day, but there are some other details that you must consider before settling on your suiting. These include the time of day that the event will take place, the season and the venue.

Choose Your Shoes

The second, and equally important, part of your wedding day look planning is the shoes and accessories. Your shoe selection must be carefully considered as shoes typically anchor the look along with the tie and pocket square selections. As a default, most gentlemen think that a navy suit should be paired with tan or brown shoes. In some instances, particularly for outdoor and more rustic weddings, this is a fine choice. But in more formal weddings, brown shoes might make the groom appear as if he is going to the office rather than getting married. Often overlooked by grooms and groomsmen is a black wholecut oxford or cap toe oxford which can be a sharp complement to the navy suit. Black shoes paired with a navy suit provide a certain level of sophistication and formality that is not necessarily as apparent with brown shoes. This combo tends to be more appropriate for evening weddings and weddings that take place in the fall and winter in cooler climates. Keep in mind there are no hard rules when it comes to selecting shoes, but some choices may be more suitable than others.

Choose Your Belt

Now what about a belt? Should you wear a belt for your Big Day? We say yes, but only if you are wearing a suit. Belts should never be worn with tuxedo pants. To make sure you don’t make this mistake, our tuxedo pants don’t even come with belt loops! Belts are one of those accessories that are both fashionable and functional.  We recommend that once you settle on a shoe color, you match your belt color to the shoes. Again, not a rule, but this makes things much more streamlined for a wedding day look.

As you plan your wedding day look, the pros at SuitShop (formerly known as The Groomsman Suit) are here to help you to consider all the details of your wedding day to settle on the best suit and accessory styles and colors. It’s important that you don’t make these decisions in a vacuum. You and your bride-to-be should look like you are going to the same party, no exceptions. And selecting your wedding day apparel should not be a chore. We want to ensure that you feel great about what you are wearing for the big day and share in the excitement about the look that you select. If for any reason you get stumped, our stylists are always here to help!

SuitShop (formerly known as The Groomsman Suit) created a new solution for black tie attire: a sharp-looking tuxedo that could be purchased for less than the cost of a traditional rental. Check out their site for style inspiration and a wide variety of formalwear options!

4 Unique Wedding Trends for Summer 2019 – with Chicago Marriott Naperville

Trying to find the perfect unique touches for your summer wedding? The wedding professionals at Chicago Marriott Naperville dropped by the blog to discuss four of their favorite upcoming trends for this summer. Scroll through and get inspired!

It can be hard to decide on the perfect details for your Big Day. At Chicago Marriott Naperville, we have the privilege of working with couples to create their dream weddings and we have seen so many different styles and trends over the years. We’ve rounded up four of our favorite trends that we’re seeing for this summer that are sure to bring a distinctive element to your wedding day. If you’re looking for just the right detail to set your wedding apart, look no further!

Bohemian Wedding Arches

Floral arches have been recently been trending for all styles of wedding, but the boho wedding arch takes a geometric twist on this staple. The boho wedding arch has a distinct geometric shape and is draped in cascading flowers, pampas grass, or another dreamy and ethereal detail. Including a bohemian wedding arch in your Big Day will add a dramatic but natural flair, and we guarantee your guests will be impressed.

Interactive Food Displays

Everyone loves a delicious treat or snack at a wedding, but you can take the culinary experience at your wedding to the next level by including an interactive food display or experience. This is one of the most fun trends we’re seeing at Chicago Marriott Chicago. A “make your own s’mores” bar is not just a delightful sweet, but a fun experience that will get guests talking, mingling, and provide that something special that everyone will always remember. From having a food truck as part of your reception fare to offering a late night snack delivered to guests in a fun way, there are plenty of ways to customize your guests’ interaction with your menu.

Acrylic Stationery

Wow your guests with modern and stylish acrylic stationery. This trend is simultaneously classy and edgy and we can’t get enough of it. Use acrylic invitations to set the tone for your Big Day or feature your seating chart or table numbers on elegant acrylics. However you choose to use this look, it will catch your guests’ attention and stand out in the best of ways.

Double Exposure Wedding Photography

These double-exposed wedding photos will have you taking a second look. These photos, which actually include one image superimposed on another, are a unique way to tell a story about your Big Day. Show off your gorgeous wedding location or venue while also including you and your partner for a more personal touch, or include a portrait that is both up close and at a distance. The options are endless when it comes to double exposure photographs, so talk to your wedding photographer about this unique trend and see what they can do.

Six Steps to Creating the Perfect Wedding Brand – with Amore Creative

So you’ve done it! You and your significant other have decided to take the plunge and get married. Before you dive into all the details, let’s start at square one: your wedding brand. The wedding professionals at Amore Creative stopped by the blog to weigh in on exactly what your wedding brand is and how to identify and create your own unique brand for your Big Day. All photos by Lindsey Taylor Photography.
What exactly is a wedding brand?

A wedding brand is the overall theme for your wedding day. From location and colors to tone and textures, a brand’s purpose is to create ambiance and emotion. Do you like whimsical romance or rustic chic? Is your heart set on an outdoor beach wedding or do you prefer a night
in the big city? As you and your fiancé begin to plan your big day, your wedding brand will be the first step of many in making your wedding a celebration of you! A wedding brand is seen first and foremost in your wedding stationery. By defining your colors, fonts, patterns, and accents, your wedding invitations can give your guest’s the first glimpse into the ambiance of your day and can help tell your special love story.

How do you create your own unique wedding brand?

1. Get inspired

Before making any appointments or placing orders, browse through the unlimited wedding magazines and websites to see what couples before you have done for their Big Day. It may seem overwhelming, but the act of viewing other wedding designs will help you narrow down what you do and don’t like for your own wedding.

2. Find Your Colors

Color sets the tone and will help tell your story. The colors you choose will be reflected in your wedding stationery and therefore be the primary introduction to your wedding brand. If you’re leaning in the direction of “English garden” you will likely choose soft pinks and greens instead of a bold black and red color scheme. Similarly, if you want your wedding brand to say “contemporary elegance” you should lean towards silver or gold, not teal and purple. The colors you choose for your wedding stationery will also help set the tone for the rest of the touches on your big day, including bridesmaids dresses, flowers, table settings, and décor.

3. Create a mood board.

The key to branding is visual and creative consistency. Write down 4-5 keywords that will represent your day and translate them visually to the mood board. This creates a visual composition of those words through fonts, colors, patterns, paper accents, monograms, etc. When choosing the elements of your board, take inspiration from your individual lives. As much as marriage is about the union of two lives, each of you still have individual personalities and interests. Honoring your individuality helps create a wedding brand that is uniquely personalized. If one of you loves contemporary art and the other loves video games, marry those worlds by incorporating a modern font with an unexpected playful design on your wedding invitations.

4. Choose your invitation style.

Since the save the date and invitation are the first introduction of your wedding brand to your family and friends, it’s important that every
element of the design is cohesive in telling your story. You can choose between an accordion fold invitation for a rustic or playful wedding, a ticket-style invitation suite for a destination or themed wedding, or letterpress for a black tie affair. What matters is that the paper stock, accents, and envelopes add a layer of personalized touch to your wedding brand. They may seem like small details, but it’s the accumulation of these small design features that really solidify your wedding brand and help tell your story.

5. Create something one-of-a-kind.

Focus on what is special in your relationship. Do you love to go to the movies? Is your favorite memory a cooking class you took together in Italy? Use these experiences as a couple to define what is special to both of you and incorporate them in your Big Day, through movie-inspired save the dates, an Italian-themed menu card, or a personalized logo used throughout your stationery suite. Having this extra element makes your wedding uniquely you and helps your guests celebrate your love.

6. Hire the right people.

Just like in business, creating a brand is time consuming and difficult. Take some stress off of your plate and look for designers with a background in art direction to help you define your style and execute on your vision. With a cohesive theme accompanied by the right colors, fonts, and personalized accents, you will be confident in your wedding brand and prepared to take the next steps in your wedding planning.

Honeymoon Winners – Emily & Matthew

Congratulations to Emily & Matthew, our latest honeymoon winners! The couple will enjoy a complimentary honeymoon to Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun after their wedding, provided by Apple Vacations. All photos by Julia Maruyama Photography.

Matt and I met in the summer of 2014 at North Central College in Naperville. We had many mutual friends, but it wasn’t until our sophomore year that we started spending more time together. My friends and I would spend chilly spring nights having bonfires with Matt and his
football teammates, and we instantly bonded over our love for s’mores. After a few weeks, Matt asked me to a Cubs game. On our first date, we laughed and shared stories the entire time. The connection was instant. Even though a baseball game is a bold first date, the 7 hours flew by! From then on, we have been attached at the hip and share a mutual love for music, our puppy, great food and family.

After graduation, we moved into the cutest yellow house together, which was nearby both of our jobs at the time. The following year we adopted our perfect pooch Charlie. She has been nothing but a joy in our lives, besides the fact that she loves eating all of Matt’s favorite shoes! Matt and I love binge watching shows, finding the best nearby cheese and wine bars, and traveling to places with amazing views. Matt has shown me a love for being outdoors and enjoying nature that I did not realize was possible. We love exploring together. We plan to visit every state together in our lifetime!

In December 2018, Matt planned the most intimate and perfect proposal. With my parents’ blessing, he presented me with my grandmother’s ring in our new apartment, among candles and rose petals. Matt and I relived our love story on December 15 when he got down on one knee
and asked me to marry him. It was the easiest question I have ever been asked. I would marry him a million times over.

Matt and I are getting married in December 2019 at Arrowhead Golf Club in Wheaton, Illinois. We have had such a wonderful time planning our winter wedding. We have our fingers crossed for a lovely flurry on our day! Some of our Chicagoland vendors are Julia Maruyama Photography, Sounds Abound Entertainment, Shamrock Garden Florist, DoubleTree by Hilton Lisle Naperville, and Kate Johnson Artistry Bridal Team. We have so many adventures in our future, but this one is my favorite. Thank you, ChicagoStyle Weddings and Apple Vacations, for this amazing opportunity. We are overjoyed!

5 Things to Remember When Creating Your Wedding Budget – with Lillian Rose Events

When you first get engaged, you probably can’t wait to start planning your dream wedding. However, there’s one less glamorous step that has to come before the rest— budgeting. Alexis Alvarez, owner and lead planner at Lillian Rose Events, dropped by the blog to share her expert advice for handling your wedding budget.  Photos by TWA Photographic Artists.
Have honest conversations with every possible financial contributor.

Let’s be honest, money conversations are yuck, but when you’re in the beginning stages of planning, it’s so important to know the real figures you’re working with. Before you start shopping for venues and interviewing pros, sit down with any parents or grandparents that might be contributing to the overall wedding budget, as well as each other, to decide what everyone is comfortable spending. Besides talking about numbers, you should also discuss any decision-making power financial contributors expect to have.

Always overestimate.

When trying to determine your per category spends, always overestimate. You’d rather end the wedding with a surplus than to go over budget. Other categories to budget for in advance: tax (11.5% in Chicago), service charges (18-25%), cash tips, and a miscellaneous fund for last minute, unexpected expenses.

Ask questions.

If you’re not sure what a fee is for, there is never any shame in asking. Ask your wedding planner what they recommend budgeting for specific categories. The more knowledge you have on why you’re paying for certain things the less daunting the final dollar amount will feel.

Know your top 3.

Go into the booking phase of planning knowing what your top 3 priorities are for your wedding. This can be broken down in a couple of ways: food, photo, floral OR can be broken down by emotion: stress-free, celebration, meaningful. The first way gives you specific areas of spending that you value most, helping to guide where you’re likely to spend more of your budget. The latter helps to tell you what you’re wanting to get out of the end result of your wedding planning experience and will help prevent “shiny object syndrome” when every decision can be tethered back to what emotional value you’ll receive from an area of spending.

Don’t expect discounts.

You’re not just paying for a vendor’s time on the wedding day. There are real-life business expenses behind every estimate that you’re given. For example, your photographer has thousands of dollars of equipment that they use not only on the wedding day itself but also to maintain their wedding day equipment and to edit, store and share your photos. Your wedding planner drives tens of thousands of miles a year and spends hundreds of hours every year developing vendor relationships that benefit you. So when you’re asking for a discount, it’s got to come from somewhere. Sometimes vendors give referral clients a discount because they are easier and less expensive to book since they’re not paying an advertising source for your business. Overall, discounts should come as a pleasant surprise, not an expectation.

Honeymoon Winners – Catherine & Colin

Congratulations to Catherine & Colin, our latest honeymoon winners! The couple will enjoy a complimentary honeymoon to Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun after their wedding, provided by Apple Vacations. All photos provided by the couple.

Colin and I actually met on a playground, when I was 10 and he was 11! We kept in touch over the years and reconnected in 2012 when we went to Summerfest together with some friends 4th of July weekend.  Sparks flew, and the rest was history!  We’ve been inseparable ever since, and we both knew our relationship would last forever since day one.  We even designed my tanzanite engagement ring at the International Gem and Jewelry Show together!  We both understand who and what we deserve in this life, and we both work hard to be that best person we can be for each other.  We are truly lucky to have found each other, and always stay focused on what is truly important.  Colin is a man of good character and integrity.  Honest, caring, responsible, I could go on and on. He really is my better half!

Seven years, three dogs, and one house purchase later, we are finally tying the knot on September 14, 2019.  Our wedding date is the same forward and backward: 9.14.19!  We didn’t even mean for that to happen or realize that we had chosen a palindrome date until months later.  This seems to be a common theme of ours, where the very things that we didn’t mean to do are really the things that are meant to be or meant to happen.  The stars align for us in different ways that we are much grateful for! You can find us trying different, new restaurants, dancing at concerts this summer, or traveling as much as we can. We were just at the Masters Tournament last week in Augusta, and plan on visiting Nashville in May!

We have really been enjoying our engagement, and planning our wedding!  (Our party bus has a mini fireplace on it!) Ever since we spotted my fiancé’s sister— who was a bridesmaid in one of the featured weddings in a ChicagoStyle Weddings magazine about a year ago— we have been looking through the magazine for inspiration ever since!  After trying on 50+ dresses, I finally found the most perfect Pronovias dress at Simply Luxe in Algonquin.  I had the best dress shop experience and highly recommend checking them out. Makeup will be done by Lisa K. with Shimmer and Pout and hair by Jessica at Chic Couture Beauty in Park Ridge. We are getting married at the beautiful Alice Millar Chapel in Evanston- which has the most amazing colorful stained glass.  We will be taking pictures at the Morton Arboretum, and dancing the night away at The Seville in Streamwood.  We have been practicing our moves at wedding dance classes, and can’t wait to show our guests our choreographed dance!   Thank you so much ChicagoStyle Weddings and Apple Vacations, we can’t wait to enjoy the sunshine!

Step-by-Step Guide to Booking Your Perfect Venue

There are many steps that go into planning a wedding, but for the most part, you cannot get started on any of them until you book your venue. Not only does your venue often dictate your wedding date, but it also sets the overall tone for your wedding depending on the location and the style of the space. So how do you go about deciding on something so important? Follow these steps to guide you through the process.

1. Determine Your Budget.

Before you start browsing venues, it is important to know your ballpark budget. As a general rule of thumb, your venue and catering will account for approximately 40 percent of your overall budget. This can change slightly depending on what’s most important to you, but it’s a good place to start when you embark on your venue search.

2. Finalize Your Guest List.

You will also need to have a good idea of the size of your guest list. Otherwise, you may waste time visiting spaces that could never fit all of your guests or miss out on unique options that only work for small groups. Of course, you won’t know your exact guest count until much closer to the wedding date, but it’s generally safe to estimate that approximately 80 percent of the people you invite will attend, so use that number when checking out capacities at venues.

3. Decide on a Ceremony Location.

Your ceremony and reception may seem like two completely separate things to plan, but it’s a good idea to know where your ceremony will take place when booking your reception venue. For example, if you are getting married in your hometown church in the suburbs, that will affect your decision on whether or not to hold your reception in the city. Keep transportation in mind for you and your guests. If you want to hold your ceremony and reception in one venue, you will need to know that going into your search so you can properly review your options and availabilities.

4. Consider Your “Vibe.”

There are countless wedding venues in the Chicagoland area, it can be extremely overwhelming when beginning your search without having some idea as to what you are looking for. Take time to consider your personal style and the overall vibe that you are hoping to achieve. Browse through wedding magazines and websites to give you an idea of the various aesthetics that are available. From there, seek out venues that specifically meet your look – like industrial chic, modern and elegant, or soft and romantic.

5. Gather Information.

Before you hit the streets for venue visits, gather as much information as you can. Check our Ceremony and Reception Guide for helpful information on the location, capacity, and inclusions. Consider creating a spreadsheet to keep track of details for each venue. Then, you can easily compare and narrow down the list to those you would like to visit in person. If you have a specific date (or a limited number of dates) in mind, ask about availability on that date ahead of time. There’s no use visiting, and potentially falling in love with, a venue if it’s not available when you want to get married.

6. Visit Your Top Choices.

Once you have narrowed down your list, schedule visits so you can see the potential venues in person. When you’re there, take time to look around at all the spaces you would potentially be using, including bathrooms. Check out available areas for you and your wedding party to get ready and relax in. Be sure to snap pictures throughout your tour. Even if you think you’ll remember everything, after seeing so many venues, they can start to blur together! But don’t only think about the space, pay attention to the person you will be working with, and get to know them a bit more. That person will play a large role in ensuring your vision is carried out and that everything goes as planned. It’s very important that you trust and can openly communicate with that person throughout the planning process.

7. Ask the Hard Questions.

Choosing a venue is more than falling in love with a pretty space. Before you sign on the dotted line, ask detailed questions to ensure there are no surprises. How many hours you will have the venue? Is there a charge for additional time? How much privacy will you have (particularly in a hotel or restaurant that might be open during your wedding)? Are there any restrictions on music? What are your meal options? Do you have to stick to an exclusive vendor list for things like catering, flowers, and lighting? Will you be responsible for set-up and cleanup? When do you have to vacate the space? Do you need liability insurance (many venues carry their own, while others require the couple and/or the vendors to do so)?

8. Put a Hold on Your Desired Date.

You don’t necessarily have to wait until you’re 100 percent certain about your choice to hold a date. Many venues allow you to hold a date, with the understanding that if another couple also requests the same date, you will have to decide quickly and put down a deposit payment. If you have narrowed your choices down to two favorites and just need to do a bit more research, put a hold on each one just in case. Wedding venues book up fast in Chicago!

9. Make Sure the Venue Works with Other Aspects of Your Wedding.

Before you finalize everything, make sure you consider the venue within the bigger picture of your wedding, particularly the budget and timeline. Now that you know how much the venue will cost, do you need to reevaluate how much to allocate to other aspects of the wedding? Are you okay with that? Ensure that you won’t have any issues with logistics, such as getting from the ceremony to the reception, getting your guests where they need to be, and having enough time for photos. It’s a good idea to double check on the aspects that are most important to you before signing the venue contract.

10. Book it!

All that’s left now is to put down your deposit payment and secure your date. It may be a bit scary to finalize that decision, but you can rest easy knowing you have done your research, asked the hard questions, and thought very carefully about this choice. Once the venue and date are confirmed, you’ll be able to move on to other fun aspects of wedding planning. But don’t feel like you have to move immediately into the next phase. Give yourself a moment to relax and relish in marking this big item off of your wedding checklist.
