Married on the Midway: A Hyde Park, Jackson Park Wedding Guide

With a wealth of new and newly renovated venues, Hyde Park’s most storied stretch of greenspace is a prime destination for a trip down the aisle. With insights from the team at The Study at University of Chicago, we explored what makes Hyde Park, and its venues along the Midway, a uniquely charming destination for Chicago weddings.
Once the vibrant heart of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, Hyde Park’s Midway Plaisance has long been a place of wonder, celebration and awe. Stretching a mile from Jackson Park to Washington Park, the Midway was the World’s Fair’s grand esplanade — lined with sideshow attractions, replica villages from far away lands and futuristic pleasure rides like the world’s first Ferris wheel. Today, that same strip of green space is a stunning backdrop for weddings that blend history, beauty and urban serenity.
In fact, one could argue the Exposition wasn’t all that different from a spectacular Chicago wedding: full of fanfare, meticulous planning and timeless photo ops. If the Court of Honor (dubbed “the White City” for its plaster of Paris structures and incandescent lights) was the Chicago World’s Fair’s ceremony venue, the Midway Plaisance would’ve been the rollicking reception venue. And just like the Fair, couples are now putting Hyde Park back in the spotlight — embracing its architectural grandeur, leafy parks and distinctive venues for events that feel both classic and contemporary.

A Love Letter to Hyde Park
From the storied buildings of the University of Chicago to the tree-lined streets and stately mansions that surround them, Hyde Park exudes character. The Columbian Exposition came and went, and under the guidance of exposition planner and “father of landscape architecture,” Frederick Law Olmsted, the Midway was transformed into a mile-long public park crossed. The burgeoning University of Chicago enveloped the park in the following decades, adding Gothic Revival landmarks such as Rockefeller Memorial Chapel to its campus. Nearly a century later, the Midway remains relatively unchanged, as beautiful and grandiose as the nearby streets and mansions of Hyde Park.
That’s exactly what brought alumni Amelia Waltman and Kalash Jain back to the Midway for their September 2024 wedding. “We met on our first day of college, and between undergrad and grad school, we spent eight years together in Hyde Park,” they shared. “We knew we wanted to get married at Bond Chapel, and The Study was by far the best reception venue.”
For couples like Amelia and Kalash, Hyde Park’s mix of historic charm and modern convenience makes it more than a neighborhood, it’s a meaningful chapter, reimagined as a wedding destination.
