The Case Against the “Timeless” Wedding

WRITTEN BY Klaudia Donovan, Glam Atelier | FEATURE PHOTO BY Ashley Ice Photography

I have a controversial opinion: I don’t think weddings need to be timeless.

Actually, I don’t think they should be. Somewhere along the way, brides got sold this idea that “timeless” is the gold standard. Timeless dress, timeless hair, timeless makeup, timeless photos, timeless decor. As if the ultimate goal is to create a wedding so stripped of personality that no one could ever accuse it of belonging to a specific era. And I’m sorry, but I think that is such a sad way to approach something that is supposed to be personal, emotional and full of life.

THE FEAR IS REAL. THE SOLUTION IS WRONG.

I hear it all the time: “I just don’t want to look back at my wedding photos in 20 years and hate them.” And I understand the fear — it’s not irrational. The world around you will tell you that “timeless” is the responsible choice, the sophisticated choice, the choice that protects you from future regret. The message brides receive, over and over, is that personality is a risk and neutrality is safe.

But I think brides are worrying about the wrong thing. Because the solution to that fear would be making every decision from a place of caution. Choosing the safer dress, the safer hair, the safer photographer, the safer makeup, the safer accessories, the safer everything. Not because these choices feel the most authentic to you, but because you’re trying to avoid the possibility of future embarrassment. And to me, that is a much bigger tragedy than looking “dated” one day.

THERE IS NO MUCH THING AS TIMELESS

Let’s also be honest: There is no such thing as a timeless wedding. None. You can always tell. You can tell by the silhouette of the dress, the shape of the bouquet, the style of the veil, the type of glam, the editing style, the poses, the everything. There is not a single wedding photo in existence that makes you say, “Wow, I truly have no idea what decade this was taken in.” And why would that even be the goal? Your wedding should reflect when it happened, who you were, what you loved, what you were drawn to and what felt beautiful to you at that moment. That is not a flaw. That is the whole magic.

A wedding that has been carefully drained of personality in the name of “timelessness” doesn’t age gracefully. It just ages. What actually holds up over time is conviction. Specificity. A genuine point of view. The bride who chose what she actually loved, who had a wedding that looked like her, whose photos have energy. Those images don’t embarrass anyone. They resonate. The hedged version, the one that tried to split the difference between trendy and classic and ended up being neither, is the one that feels hollow ten years later.

THE CASE FOR THE SLEEVES

Being “of the time” is not a failure. Really, it’s what makes old wedding photos so good! Imagine if ‘80s brides had all chickened out over the sleeves. Imagine if everyone played it safe to make sure nothing looked “too trendy.” What a loss! The sleeves were fabulous. The drama was fabulous. The excess was fabulous. And now those photos have character. They tell the truth. They don’t just show two people getting married, they capture a whole feeling, a whole era. And if being “of your time” is what gives photos their power, then why not choose what you actually love? Why not have the wedding that feels the most like you instead of the one designed to offend absolutely no one? No one is going to look at your wedding photos 20 years from now and say, “Such a shame she looked so 2026.” That is not a real problem. If anything, it is beautiful. It means the photos did their job.

YOUR WEDDING SHOULD BE SPECIFIC

That’s what I want from a wedding. Not something so neutral and careful that it could belong to anyone. I want personality. I want taste. I want point of view. I want the photos to feel like a time capsule of who that couple really was — their energy, their chemistry, their style, their version of beauty. Not a watered-down performance of what the industry has decided is the safest possible version of elegance.

A wedding album should not feel like a blank slate. It should feel like a love story with visual evidence. A record of your taste, your instincts, your obsessions, your courage to choose what felt right instead of what felt safest. That’s what makes an image memorable. Not that it escaped time, but that it belonged to it so fully.

A marriage is meant to transcend time. To outlast trends, seasons, eras, all of it. Of course it should be timeless. But a wedding is a single day, a specific moment, a snapshot of exactly who you were and what you loved when you chose each other. Moments are supposed to be of their time. That’s what makes them matter.

So no, I don’t think your wedding should be timeless. I think your marriage should be. Your wedding should be specific, expressive and full of personality. It should look like the two of you — and yes, maybe even like the decade you got married in. What a blessing it is to be married long enough that your wedding goes out of style.
