How Can Mom Help Her Daughter Find the Perfect Wedding Dress? – With Kathryn’s Bridal

By Anna Novak, Marketing Manager at Kathryn’s Bridal | Feature Photo by Monica Lynn Photo

As a bridal boutique, we at Kathryn’s Bridal often encounter nervous mothers worried about what to say or do during their daughter’s wedding gown dress shopping appointment. So many thoughts and concerns run through the mind of a mom! Some commonly asked questions include:

  • What is the appropriate amount of involvement that a mom should have?
  • Can I tell my daughter which gown is my favorite?
  • Does my daughter really want my opinion?
The search for your daughter’s wedding dress should be fun and memorable. This is a day your daughter has probably dreamed of. Shopping for her wedding dress can truly be a wonderful time for mother/daughter bonding. Based on our experience, we’d like to offer some words of wisdom to ease a mother’s mind while accompanying her daughter to her appointment.

The Honor of your Company

Remember that your daughter invited you to be present at this moment because your presence matters to her. Deep down inside, every daughter wants her mother’s love and approval. Simply being there for her with an open, loving heart is most important. Tell your daughter she is beautiful. She wants to hear those words come out of your mouth. She dreams of making you proud. The only thing you must remember to do during the appointment is smile and nod to express your pride.

Offer Your Approval

When she asks you which dress is your favorite, resist the temptation to admit you actually have a preference. Even if you do not like her favorite, refrain from expressing your opinion. She is really hoping you will love her top dress as much as she does. Therefore, do not disappoint her by expressing any form of hesitation. She will be crushed if your opinion differs from hers.  She wants your support and approval. This is the moment when you repeat the words: “You look beautiful.”

Share in the Excitement

When your daughter is ready to say “yes” to the dress and joy is beaming from her face, please do not deflate her moment by suggesting she “sleep on it.” The actual excitement for her is in the very minute she knows this is her dress. Suggesting she leave the shop empty-handed to spend the evening thinking about a dress will only create hesitation and doubt. Questioning her at this decision-making time can often crush her self-esteem and create confusion. In our experience, brides are looking to Mom for support. So, share in her joy and excitement! Tell her congratulations when she decides!

Wishing all our brides and mothers the most wonderful shopping experience ever!

Fashion Editorial: No Take Backs

As white frosting on the heart-shaped cake taunts, “No Take Backs,” we are welcomed into this vibrant love story. Fun, creativity and a touch of whimsy certainly define the essence of this wedding vision at CSK (Centre Street Kitchen) in Lincoln Park.

In the wedding world, neutrals and pastels will always have a treasured home. But just because those color palettes are a reliable force doesn’t mean denying bold, colorful inspiration. When dreaming up this styled shoot, the team envisioned a not-so-bohemian garden party vibe. Thus a playful and zesty ambiance emerged, rather than the vintage vibe often associated with courtyard events. Unbridled fun thrives here, enlivened by elements like a rosé tower and vegan red velvet cake.

As if handwritten in glitter gel pen, this playful scene invites couples to embrace whimsy. Consider this your sign to explore the possibilities, deny the neutrals and let love lead the way.

Behind “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue”

Featured Photos (from left to right): Danielle Heinson Photography, Winterlyn Photography, Danielle Heinson Photography, Alana Lindenfeld Photography

You’ve heard the old rhetoric, “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue,” but what does it mean? Let’s dive in. This proverb stems from English folklore and offers a recipe many couples believe to be the precursor to a successful marriage. The rhyme outlines four items you must carry or incorporate into your wedding day for good luck.

While the tradition behind the rhyme has evolved, many nearlyweds still choose to incorporate these four elements into their weddings to honor tradition and bring good luck to their marriages.

Fashion Editorial: My Kind of Town

From shooting 83 floors up at the newly renovated St. Regis to sailing away on a luxury sailboat on Lake Michigan, this editorial is a love letter to Chicago.

For the fashion, stylist Catherine Vreeland of Mira Couture was inspired by the city’s architecture. A mix of modern glass skyscrapers and gothic 1920s classics dominates Chicago’s skyline, and the gowns here reflect that modern-yet-worldly aesthetic. From custom in-house designs by Mira Couture to gowns by Kim Kassas and Marchesa, fashionable old-world touches played beautifully with modern silhouettes. Defined by movement and flow, each scene of this story reflects an artful juxtaposition and sky-high style.
