Shivani & Tim: Heirlooms, Heritage and Heart at The Dalcy
For more than 75 years, Tim’s grandmother’s wedding gown lay carefully preserved in a box. On a fall Saturday in Chicago’s West Loop, Shivani (“Shiv”) slipped into the silk dress and gave it a second walk down the aisle.
The heirloom felt right at home in a wedding weekend shaped by family, tradition and the joining of two cultures. The day before their Western ceremony at The Dalcy, Shiv and Tim celebrated with a Hindu ceremony and Sangeet at Ignite Glass Studios. Surrounded by marigold, sunshine and hot pink florals, both families embraced the Indian traditions that kicked off the weekend.
By the following evening, the bright colors of Friday had given way to rich shades of ruby and scarlet. Flowers for Dreams transformed The Dalcy with masses of monochromatic blooms, while ivory drapery softened the venue’s industrial edges. Tying it all together, floating installations of cloudlike red baby’s breath drew the eye upward, creating an immersive atmosphere that went beyond just tablescapes.
Family remained at the center of the celebration. Shiv’s younger sister officiated the ceremony, Tim’s cousin played piano for the procession and family history was woven into Shiv’s attire — from Tim’s grandmother’s gown to a bracelet worn by generations of women before her.
For all the meaningful heirlooms and traditions woven throughout the weekend, what guests will likely remember most is the feeling in the room. From surprise Sangeet performances to a celebration that never ran out of energy, Shiv and Tim threw the kind of wedding people talk about on the drive home.
