Sew Many Decisions: A Guide to Navigating Bridal Alterations – with Love, DIA Couture

WRITTEN BY Delcia Norwood, Love, DIA Couture and Fashion | FEATURE PHOTO BY Wonder & Magic

Whether you’ve been sewing since childhood, picked up a few tricks watching “The Great British Sewing Bee” or have never sewn a button, bridal alterations can feel confusing, overwhelming and downright scary! A quick Google search turns up dozens of providers with no real way to know who to trust, what to budget or which great sewist is worth your time. But with this guide, I’ll help you cut through the noise and find a pro who will give you a great experience.

1. All Garments Are Not Created Equal

Everyone has heard a horror story: a friend of a friend whose dream dress was botched in alterations. More often than not, it didn’t happen due to negligence, but rather plain old lack of knowledge and experience with bridal. Bridal garments are a beast of a different kind compared to everyday apparel. These garments are constructed using specialty and proprietary fabrics, requiring specialized techniques and tools and require the alterationist to lean heavily on previous experience. Additionally, bridal styles are seasonal, fabrics get discontinued and a single misstep can mean replacing an entire gown. Before you choose a provider, make sure they understand exactly what they’re working with, as even a seasoned sewist may never encounter the specialty techniques utilized in bridal gown construction. A great alterations experience starts with respecting how different bridal garments can be from other types of apparel.

2. All Alterations Are Not Created Equal

Choosing the right provider within bridal is determined by the kind of alterations needed. If your bridal look is exactly the design you want, as with most made-to-measure purchases, you might only need fit alterations. But not every alteration is a simple tuck or hem — and not every provider offers the same range of services.

If your bridal look is “almost” what you want, but you want to customize the design — swapping panels, adding embellishments, modernizing a vintage piece — you need a provider who offers redesign services in addition to fit services.

And if your bridal look is not available in the market at all, you’re looking for a custom designer, possibly paired with a separate fitter on top of that. Knowing what kind of service you need will narrow down the number of providers you’ll need to consider, making the task so much easier to conquer.

3. All Expertise Is Not Created Equal

Once you’ve identified the type of work you need, it’s time to research providers. It’s not enough to just take recommendations from your bridal shop or previous brides, since your bridal salon’s go-to alterationist or a fellow bride’s glowing referral may not offer the specific services you’re looking for. Start by narrowing your list based on who is capable of performing the specific work you’re looking for. A sewist experienced in producing garments from patterns may not have the training to alter finished ones. An alterationist who excels at fit work may not have the knowledge to fundamentally change a garment’s design. A designer who creates samples may not have honed the intuition for fitting garments on a live body. Look for someone with the ability to fit a broad range of body types, execute diverse techniques and bring established bridal experience to the table — all backed by great client reviews. And don’t be afraid to travel! The best bridal alterationists’ schedules can fill up fast each season, and walking confidently down the aisle on the most photographed day of your life is worth the extra miles.

4. All Pricing Is Not Created Equal

In the Chicagoland area, professional bridal alterations range from $400 to $2,000, and the gap between those numbers depends on the service, complexity of the garment and expertise of the provider. In general, the more complex and involved your alterations order is, and the more expertise and education your provider has, the more your alterations cost can be. However, it’s not always obvious how involved your order will be until you’re in the fitting room. Many brides experience sticker shock when that “just a hem and bustle” turns out to be a fully enclosed horsehair hem with an organza interlining and a third layer of silk lining. Easily a full day’s labor!

Alterationists who just dabble in the profession may not carry insurance or maintain a proper fitting space. Even if they have strong skills, these non- professionals may be less expensive but the risk falls entirely on you as the client.

You have to consider if that gamble is it worth saving a few bucks over. Don’t be afraid to book consultations with a couple different providers to get fit assessments and quotes, and decide who you feel comfortable working with. The relatively small investment of the consultation fee is worth the peace of mind that comes with knowing you chose well.

5. All Reviews Are Not Created Equal

You are a smart shopper for checking reviews before committing to a provider! Just be sure to check that the reviews you are reading are relevant to the services you’re seeking. You’d never choose an apple based on how great the oranges are, so treat your review research the same way. Do they specifically mention bridal? Are there any negative reviews, and if so, are they responded to respectfully and with consideration for the other perspective? Are employee reviews publicly available? How do current and former staff rate the provider overall? Considering the full range of perspectives gives you the clearest picture of the service and expertise you can expect.

Live Your Bridal Legacy

Your bridal season should be one of the most exciting and anticipated times of your life, and you deserve to feel seen, heard, valued and appreciated by expert providers who will treat your journey to the aisle with respect.

Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be set to walk into your bridal alterations experience and receive all that and more.
