“Mark and I met on a recruitment trip to The Ohio State University as high school seniors in 2002. Although we were friends throughout college, we didn’t start dating until almost exactly four years after meeting. We dated and fell in love during the next five years.
“Despite this, from 2011 to 2014, our relationship took a backseat while we were pursuing our careers. I was finishing law school and starting my career. Meanwhile, Mark was in medical school. We reconnected in early 2014.  By the spring of 2015, we were moving back to Columbus, Ohio for Mark’s residency in Anesthesia. Mark and I became engaged in October 2015, and we quickly decided to plan a wedding for early January 2016.
“Our wedding day was relaxed and elegant. We picked our color scheme by using each of our favorite colors — navy blue and kelly green. We picked venues with décor that could stand up on its own, so we kept the flowers simple with white roses, tulips, peonies, and hydrangeas.
“We both got ready in separate suites at the Westin Chicago River North. Neither of us had a defined wedding party, but we got ready with our mothers, Mark’s sisters, my grandmother, and our closest friends. For my something old, new, borrowed, and blue, I wore my great-grandmother’s veil from the 1920’s, my dress, and blue shoes. I borrowed Mark’s grand-mother’s handkerchief. I also had a six pence in my shoe in remembrance of my English ancestry.
“Mark and I had our first look photos taken at the Westin prior to going to our ceremony. We especially loved the photos with Chicago in the background. We had an intimate ceremony and dinner with our immediate family at Paris Club. The ceremony was perfect, I was either laughing or crying throughout the whole thing. Right before we started the ceremony, we found out that we would be the last event ever to be held at Paris Club. Mark’s brother-in-law was our officiant and both of Mark’s sisters were readers.
“After an amazing French-inspired dinner, the celebration began. We walked down the block to Sub 51. We cut our cake and had our first dance as husband and wife. Then we kept the party going with the help of DJ Harsh, and we had a great time dancing with our family and friends. We used our favor as the moment to give a huge nod to where we met, by having each guest receive two candy buckeyes. After a great dance party, we hosted a small after party back at the Westin.” — Emily
