“Mike and I met at a Halloween party in Chicago. The party was being hosted by a college friend of my roommate’s boyfriend, and he invited me to tag along. I met Mike within five minutes of being at this party, and we got to talking and really hit it off. Everyone knows cabs are impossible to get on any holiday in Chicago (Uber didn’t exist yet?), and later that night, Mike ended up helping me get a cab for what seemed like eternity. He asked for my phone number and called me the very next day to set up our first date.
I knew Mike was perfect for me because I always wanted more of him. We would go on one date a week and eventually that turned to two dates and then suddenly we were doing everything together. Everything fell into place and felt natural. I was the most finicky and picky eater before meeting Mike, but after just two months, he had me eating sushi and steaks! We would find ourselves walking around Chicago with no plan at all and finding fun in everything we did.
We had our ceremony onsite at The Drake Oak Brook Hotel under the Gazebo in the garden. Walking down the aisle and seeing all of our closest relatives and friends was the most joyous feeling ever. Neither of us were nervous- we both really wanted to get married! Mike and I stood in front of the Gazebo and the bridal party stood inside it and made an upside down V. I really liked this because we felt closer to everyone. After the ceremony, we gathered with friends and family, signed our marriage license, and then headed off to our new home to take photos with the bridal party. Mike and I had closed on our house just one month before the wedding, and by far the best thing we picked to do was to take photos in our own backyard. We have an old swing set, and the pictures we took on the swings turned out to be some of my favorites from the entire day.
Following pictures, we returned to The Drake Oak Brook Hotel for our reception. We had to get creative with room set up as we had a LARGE bridal party and really wanted them to be able to sit with their dates, so we set up two kings tables with multiple candelabras, one to the left of our sweet heart table and one to the right. Mike and I entered to the song “My Best friend” by Queen and had our first dance to “Crazy Love” by Van Morrison. The Drake Oak Brook Hotel has a one of a kind 3D dance floor made of LEDs, which added a lot of natural fun to the evening. We had a sparkler send off planned, but little did I know Mike’s dad had a major surprise up his sleeve. They made an announcement for everyone to meet on the veranda for the sparkler send off and suddenly we were watching our own private fireworks display. To say it was magical is an understatement; we both were blown away by how awesome it was. Neither of us know how the night could have gotten any better!”
