A Green Thumb Spirit

The first week of Megan Blomquist and Bradley Sklenar’s freshman year at the University of Illinois-Chicago, the two met and bonded over an appreciation of Mario Kart, junk food, and cult films. When the timing was right – after eight years of dating and upon Megan’s return from studying abroad – their years of friendship blossomed into romance and then bloomed into love.

The couple’s “green thumb spirit flowed throughout the [wedding] day,” said Megan, which was hosted at Chicago’s historical greenhouse, the Garfield Park Conservatory. The couple embraced an ethereal theme with succulent plants as wedding favors, vintage-style plum bridesmaids’ gowns, luxurious floral arrangements, and a lemon tree planting during Megan and Bradley’s ceremony on the Conservatory’s patio.

However, Mother Nature had other plans for the ceremony – halfway through, heavy rains began to fall. The couple and their guests swiftly dashed back inside the greenhouse, where an unplanned guest sing-along to “I Want to Hold your Hand,” by the Beatles became the alternative conclusion to Megan and Bradley’s ceremony. Wedding guests enjoyed the remainder of the evening indoors and dry, with scrumptious southern cooking, delicious drinks, and lots of dancing.

The couple was thrilled to include many of their family and friends on their big day. A close aunt officiated the ceremony, and friends aided the couple with wedding planning, videography, stationery, and flowers.

“A little rain on [our] parade couldn’t stop [our] marriage from a wonderful beginning,” said Megan. A happy marriage is also attributed to Brad still beating Megan at Mario Kart
