It’s your wedding day! The ones you hold near and dear have all gathered to celebrate with you. This is a very special moment in your life. As you reflect on how you both made it to this day, we’re sure you have some very important people who have been with you throughout pivotal moments in your life.

Your wedding day is a wonderful way to honor these special people and there are many ways you can do so. We typically see siblings and close friends in the role of maid/matron of honor, best man, bridesmaids, and groomsmen. You may have parents, step-parents, or other family members that are also part of this VIP group but don’t have an honorary or official “title” or “role.” Here are some great ways to make your important people feel like an important part of your day.

Tip #1 – Ceremony

  • You can choose a separate processional song for grandparents, mothers, or sponsors to walk down the aisle. If you are having trouble choosing a song, ask a grandmother or mother for their favorite song. One of our favorite tributes was playing a bride’s grandmother’s first dance song for when she walked down the aisle.
  • You can offer flowers to your mothers during the ceremony. These flowers are usually long-stemmed roses and can be given to the mothers after the vows and rings are exchanged.
  • It is a very big honor to invite a friend or relative to give a reading during the ceremony.  The reading can be a prayer or bible verse, a favorite quote, or even lyrics of a song.

Tip #2 – Reception

  • Allowing your maid/matron of honor, your best man, and your fathers to say a toast is traditional wedding etiquette and a great way to honor their special role in your life and in your wedding day. We typically see the Father of the Bride giving his toast as part of the Welcome to the Reception. The maid/matron of honor and best man toasts typically occur after the first course has been served. Build time into the rehearsal dinner festivities for others who have stories and toasts they want to share — time is so limited during the reception! This way, instead of saying “no” due to time constraints, the honor can happen at a different time during the celebration.
  • Having a Father/Daughter, Mother/Son, or Parent Dance is also customary at a wedding Reception. Many times, honorary or step-parents can be included in this tradition by “cutting in” during the dance or having their own separate dance to showcase their significance in your life. These dances typically occur after the First Dance or right before the dance floor is open to all guests.
  • Sentimental songs and sentimental dances are another way to show you care. What a wonderful memory to have a picture of you dancing with your grandmother or grandfather! The dance can be an unannounced moment that is planned with just your planner, bandleader, and photographer. Also think about memories with friends and family, and the songs that were in those moments, and have a special dedication during dinner or dancing. This could be a song from an album that you always listened to around the family dinner table or campfire, or a favorite hit from college.

Tip #3 – Gratitude The band has stopped playing and your night has ended. Don’t forget to give a hug to the special people in your life that helped you celebrate your most special day. When you’ve returned from your honeymoon, make sure to drop a note, and perhaps a little gift, in the mail to show your gratitude to your cherished family and friends.
