When Kristin Hage began planning her wedding to Kirt Hartman, she saw green as the color that would pull the day together and highlight the beauty of late summer.
"The entire wedding was framed around my love for green cymbidium orchids, which are a pale apple green in color," says Kristin. "We combined the apple green flowers with blush pink roses and hydrangea to pop against the table linens and gorgeous back drop of the Chicago History Museum." The table linens, which were rented from BBJ Linens in Skokie, were an Apple Green Bengaline with White Garden Cutwork overlay.
Kristin and Kirt met when they were both working at Arthur Andersen in the Fall of 2001. After being friends for a couple of years, they began dating during the Summer of 2003.
"Kirt proposed to me on a beautiful, warm day in February 2005. We had planned to go ice skating at Millennium Park, but our plans changed with unseasonably high temperatures and melting ice!" remembers Kristin.
Instead, they went for a walk through Lincoln Park. "Kirt surprised me and proposed on the bridge over the Lincoln Park lagoon (behind the Lincoln Park Zoo and Café Brauer)! We celebrated our engagement with dinner at Charlie Trotters immediately after and a party (pre-arranged by Kirt) with family and friends at the Black Duck in Lincoln Park," she adds.
When it came to making their wedding a reality, Kirt and Kristin had considered using a wedding planner but instead decided to do it themselves. "A long 18 month engagement allowed us to spread the planning out and remain mostly stress free," says Kristin. "We secured the big aspects, like the church, venue and caterer right away, and slowly worked on the other details while enjoying the engagement."
It also helped that Kristin knew the colors she wanted. The apple color scheme she chose continued with the wedding party. The groomsmen all wore black tuxes with apple green vests and ties and, to top it off, one full size cymbidium orchid boutonnières on their lapel. The four ring bearers were dressed similarly.
Kristin, wearing a simple A-line off-white Paloma Blanco dress of raw silk, carried a bouquet of romantic pink cymbidium orchids with apply green hydrangea surrounding them. The bridesmaids carried bouquets that were the reverse—green in the middle surrounded by pink.
The ceremony took place at St. Clements's Catholic Church in Lincoln Park, and then for ease the guests were picked up by trolley for a tour of the city and dropped off at the Chicago History Museum for the cocktail and dinner reception.
The "apple green" theme even went to the food. The couple served a luscious multi-tiered garden cake with white butter crème frosting with sporadic pink & apple green fondant flowers and apple green ribbon around the base of each layer.
Best moment? "Being announced as husband and wife at the reception and dancing our first dance in front of all of our loved ones. How many times do you get all of your favorite people in one room for such a wonderful party and celebration?!" says Kristin.
