It’s tradition to celebrate weddings with cake, but for Annette Bleka’s marriage to Daniel Waligora, two cakes were in order: a stacked seven-layer wedding cake for family and friends, and a homemade birthday cake for the bride who celebrated her 22nd birthday on her wedding day last September.
It took two years for all the details of their lavish celebration to come together. The festivities began with a Polish mass at SS. Cyril and Methodius in Lemont, which included a processional to music by a Polish highlander folk group and a floral offering to the Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa to ask for her blessing for a happy, healthy life together. Following the ceremony, the bridal party released butterflies to signal the newlywed’s exit from the church and the couple released a pair of white doves.
Everyone gathered at Bolingbrook Golf Club for the reception, where guests sampled a variety of passed hors d’oeuvres before heading to their tables. Covered in ivory linens and floral centerpieces in hues of copper, ivory, and amber, the tables were lit by votive candles that reflected off tabletop ice sculptures filled with chilled bottles of Tanqueray. An extraordinary feast prepared by Bolingbrook Golf Club followed, highlighted by filet mignon with roasted garlic demi glace, wild mushroom strudel, and pecan crusted breast of chicken with whiskey maple sauce. Dessert was Chantilly cream topped with marinated berries; for those that were still hungry, a sweet table loaded with mouth-watering desserts waited in the hallway.
The Jan Krol Band took center stage after dinner, giving everyone a chance to work off the delicious dinner. Friends and family got in on the action as well; a friend from Arkansas sang and their bridal party performed a Polish Highlander choreographed dance for the newlyweds. “They put a lot of hard work and effort into learning it,” said Annette. “It meant a lot to us.”
When the party began to wind down around midnight, a late-night buffet was served filled with roasted pig, lamb, sauerkraut from Joe & Frank’s Deli, and assorted salads prepared by Bolingbrook Golf Club. Another ice sculpture filled with shrimp, salmon, and various dipping sauces, rounded out the spread.
It’s Polish tradition to celebrate weddings for two days, so the festivities continued on Sunday with a gathering for their closest family and friends. The couple boarded a plane Monday for a honeymoon that took them to San Francisco, then Maui, and returned them to the Santa Monica Hotel where they became engaged two years before. “We really had a great honeymoon,” said Annette. “We wouldn’t change a thing.”
