Your first dance song should be special to you and be a reflection of your relationship. If you still find yourself struggling with your song choice, here are five songs many of our current couples are choosing:
1. “You are the Best Thing” by Ray LaMontagne
2. “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran
3. “Crazy Love” by Van Morrison
4. “Your Song” by Elton John or Ellie Goulding‘s fantastic remake
5. “Just the Way You Are” by Billy Joel or Bruno Mars‘ modern take
At what point in the night should you have your first dance? Some couples like to kick off the evening with their first dance, so as soon as they are introduced into their reception they head to the center of the dance floor. However, if you have hired a band to perform at your reception, you probably will not have the full band performing at that time. In this case, you will want to wait until after your entrée or dessert is completed before you put on your dancing shoes to get the party started. If you would prefer to not have to wait for the full band for your first dance, you can always play a recording.
Not all of us have the same confidence on the dance floor. You may find comfort in taking some dance lessons before performing your first dance. There are some wonderful dance studios in Chicagoland that can assist you in your steps and turns. Most couples need 5-10 lessons to work through their choreographed dance. You also don’t have to do the entire first dance by yourself. You can invite guests to join in half way through, or dance to an edited or shortened version of the song.
Give It a Whirl
We find that couples like to practice their first dance after the first look, during their private moment after the ceremony, or when they have a preview of their reception room. Dancing in dress shoes and a floor length gown is far different than practicing in your living room in yoga pants. Having the bride’s dress bustled and taking just a couple of minutes to glide across the dance floor brings confidence to our couples.
Enjoy your planning and let your music tell your love story!
